Aza and Enki jumped to their feet when Yua entered her room. The transition felt different from last time—less like a chore and more of a regret. Easier, but a part of her hadn’t wanted to leave the Mists, and she didn’t think it was all her Shadow. If she kept visiting, would she eventually simply refuse to return? But then what? There was nowhere to live in the Mists, no blood to drink.

I always managed, her Shadow whispered.

Yua wanted to answer, but she didn’t know how. Maybe it was that simple—just dissolve into the Mists and float along its currents.

You didn’t need blood before me? she silently replied.

And now look at us both, finding that thought strange.

Yua smirked.

Aza threw herself into Yua’s arms. ‘Aste os, I’m glad you’re back! What happened? Did you find anything?’

Yua nuzzled into Aza’s neck. She held on to Aza, but her eyes didn’t leave Enki.

‘I have,’ Yua said. ‘Enki, if I described someone, would you be able to tell me if they were your captor?’

He was her best bet of confirming that Kenshin was behind this nightmare, but she didn’t want to put Enki through more than necessary. If the description fit, she’d have Kenshin taken in for questioning. If it didn’t match... Why had Kenshin’s energy been in the Mists if not for that? Maybe she should just ask Aza to question him and be done with it.

But then, if there’d been a mistake and Kenshin had nothing more to do with this, they could break him, and she wasn’t convinced he was all that whole anymore with the way he jumped every time she approached him. She wouldn’t do it just to know. She had to be better than that.

‘Maybe.’ Enki wrung his hands. ‘It was dark most of the time.’

‘What if I brought you to him?’ Yua swallowed when Enki paled. ‘Would you recognise him?’

Aza pulled away. ‘You know who did it?’

There was a weight in Yua’s throat that wouldn’t go away, and it was beginning to taste like bile.

‘I found an energy signature in the Mists. We tried to trace it, but we could only follow it to the spots the Shadows were taken from.’

Aza crossed her arms; it looked less tough and more like she was hugging herself. ‘How many were there?’

‘At least seven.’

Enki’s eyes darted between Yua and Aza. ‘I was the only one there, I swear!’

Yua nodded and walked over to him. ‘I know, I believe you. I think he’s keeping them in different locations.’

If Enki was an early experiment, Kenshin might have kept him alone before he learned that he didn’t have the room to isolate them all. Or maybe Enki was a later experiment, and Kenshin had learned what to do by then. Her heart constricted at the thought of the other Blood Wisps and the state they’d be in: starving for blood, scratching at their cages. Hissing at every shaft of light falling through the floorboards in case they meant their captor was back.
